The core function of manufacturing change management systems is a four step process that uses a logical layout to process each change or project that is passed through the system. The first step of this four step process is what is known as the Initiation phase. This phase involves someone, either an employee, manager or business owner, to submit a form filled with information regarding the change in question. This information includes the estimated time frame for completion, basic and in depth descriptions of the change or project as well as which group the project needs to be assigned to. Once this is finished, the project is passed to the Approval stage. The automated e-mail notification system sends a message to each member of this group when this happens, which informs them that there is a new change that needs to be processed. Users of the group will begin to discuss all of the aspects of the project and lay out specifications for what needs to be done and when.

Once this is accomplished, the project is pushed to the Implementation phase of the process. This is where the project is carried out according to the specifications decided on in the previous phase. When this is completed, the final phase of the process will begin. This is the Confirmation phase. During this stage, the completed project will be reviewed to make sure that all of the required specifications have been met.
